The Right Tools Make All the Difference

HairQueen News

Before I rush off for some R&R on vacation, I wanted to let you all know about a really exciting retail rewards program that I’ve started at Swan's Studios. For every $100 you spend on salon retail product, you will receive $5.00 off your next purchase. I firmly believe in the products that I carry in my salon. These products include Framesi Color Lover products, Framesi BY and Crew styling products, and more.

BY  Framesi - Refined in both formulation and presentation, BY Framesi products are the perfect combination of a search for the most exclusive look and targeted hair care treatment. Click here for more information on the BY product line.

Framesi Color Lover is a highly protective line of shampoos and conditioners, formulated to combat fading and prolong cosmetic coloring, deeply moisturizing, to keep the hair feeling soft, shiny, and radiant. Effectively specific to give the best result on every type of color-treated hair: fine (Color Lover Volumizing), coarse (Color Lover Moisture Rich ), curly (Color Lover Curl) or straight (Color Lover Smooth Shine).

American Crew - my great men's hair product line. Click here for more information.
Kendra - dandruff shampoo, clarifying shampoo, dry shampoo

Please let me know the next time you are in the salon if you need to restock on any product or feel you need to try something new. I’d be happy to make a recommendation.

Story of the Month - Product Diversion

There is a very important issue happening in the hair industry currently and I think as a business
consultant and hair stylist it is important for me to educate my clients on what product diversion is and how it impacts you as a consumer and me as a hairstylist.

What exactly is product diversion?
By definition, diversion is when products designed and meant for exclusive distribution at a specific store end up on the shelves of an unintended store. In terms of the beauty industry, diversion occurs when professional salon products like Matrix or American Crew are sold at non-salon locations.

Is product diversion illegal?
Unfortunately, no. There are breaches in contracts between manufacturers and distributors as a result of the diversion, but a vendor cannot demand the removal of their product from an unauthorized store.

How do I spot diverted products?
The next time you are at your local retail store, look at the labels of the products in the “Professional Hair Care” section. Products that have the phrase “for sale in professional salons only” or “guaranteed only when purchased in a salon” have been diverted. Any professional product you find outside of a salon is diverted and thus not guaranteed to be at the same level of quality as those found in the salon.

Why should I care about product diversion?
Diverted professional products are obtained through the “gray” or “black” market. In many instances these products have been found to be old, counterfeit, or containing harmful bacteria. These products may not be safe to use and are not guaranteed by the manufacturer.

Aren’t the products at the store cheaper than at my salon?
This is a common misconception. Diverted products tend to go through many channels during the black market process. In the end, this makes the prices higher and allows the diverters to make more money. Sometimes the product can cost up to twice as much as you would pay in a salon! For example:
            Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum
                     Manufacturer suggested retail price: $16.95
                     Mass retail price:                               $28.99

Why not make hair-care products available everywhere?
Professional salon products have been specially developed for your individual hair type. These products need recommendations by a professional stylist who has been trained to do so. Your stylist can make educated product recommendations for your specific situation and show you exactly how to use it. You can’t find this expert advice in a drug store.

How can I help fight against diversion?
Buy professional hair-care products ONLY at your salon. Make sure your support goes to companies that are part of the solution, not part of the problem. Purchase non-diverted lines as opposed to heavily diverted products.

Retirement Life

HairQueen News On October 1 2022 after 40 plus years of working full-time I stepped way-back from the salon chair and way-into retirement life.   As the date grew closer, I was and still am all over the place with so many feelings and uncertainties about how to navigate this next stage. To mark the occasion of my retirement I had a wonderful party, please see the previous blog, Endings and Beginnings.  Next, I went on a celebratory trip which included a week sailing the Atlantic Ocean on the Queen Mary 2.  So exciting! Crossing the Atlantic Ocean Gala Time Upon my return I am turning my attention to what it means to be an older, wiser, experienced, master of my trade.  As space in my life opens up I will take the opportunity to grow Swans Studios, to mentor, coach and consult within and beyond the salon industry. With more free time I will enjoy my granddaughters, my family, friends and hobbies. I know from many of you that the retired life is a busy life and I am grateful t
